Familiarize Yourself with State Laws Governing Insurance for Women
Women have specific health issues unique to them. It is wise to keep these issues in mind when researching health care plans. Some health care issues and services specific to women are regulated by state insurance laws. It is in your best interest to educate yourself on the laws in your state. For example, North Carolina requires all insurance plans to cover cervical cancer screenings and any complications resulting from a pregnancy. State law in Hawaii mandates necessary coverage of well child care, infertility services and/or in vitro fertilization. Alabama law requires plans to cover minimum maternity stays. Most states require mammography screenings, breast reconstruction, and prenatal care to be included in every health care policy.
Find Health Insurance That Addresses Your Unique Needs as a Woman
If your state does not require covered cervical exams, as a woman, you should search for a plan which covers this expense anyway, especially if you have a family history of cervical cancer. If you have a history of breast cancer in your family, it would be wise to purchase a plan which pays for mammography screenings and breast reconstruction. Are you planning on having children in the future? Ask about the minimum maternity stays, well child care, prenatal services, fertility services, maternity care, pregnancy complications and newborn coverage offered by the plan. Some policies offer free contraception, home health care, drug abuse treatment and mental health insurance. Some may offer screening for ovarian cysts and cover cyst removal. What about hormone replacement therapy for women experiencing menopause?
Once you decide what is important to you, you can seek a plan which meets your needs. The more you know, the better off you are to make intelligent, informed choices about your health care.
