Health Statistics in Vermont

About 10 percent of Vermonter mothers-to-be don't receive the prenatal care they need to ensure a healthy and safe delivery. This results in about 420 low birth weight babies each year, or 6.4 percent of all newborns. Another 8 percent are born prematurely, all due to lack of health insurance. Seventeen percent of children in Vermont under the age of 3 don't get the immunizations they need, 11 percent are overweight, and about half didn't get to see both a doctor and a dentist last year. Even the most basic insurance plan will help prevent most of these issues.

Vermont Health Insurance Needs

A good health insurance policy to cover annual checkups would be benificial to everyone who calls Vermont home. A number of chronic conditions are common in the state; 6 percent of adults are diagnosed with diabetes, 15 percent have asthma, 54 percent are obese or overweight and 19 percent are smokers. If caught early and properly treated and monitored, more serious conditions can be mitigated, but a good health insurance policy is necessary to make that happen.

Vermont Health Insurance Laws

Vermont law prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage because of a health problem. Companies must offer family coverage if it is requested. Pre-existing conditions can be temporarily excluded with the imposition of a maximum exclusion period of 12 months, but can not be permanently excluded through the attachment of an elimination rider. You can receive creditable coverage if you have had continuous coverage with no lapse longer than 63 days. Regulations limit premium price increases. Your policy can not be cancelled because you become sick.
