If you have recently lost your job and are now without health insurance, finding an affordable and inclusive health insurance policy is often an uphill climb. Should you find yourself in this situation, don't despair. The good news is that there are options available to you when it comes to getting adequate health care when you are unemployed.

Unemployed Health Insurance Options

There are a few options which you can look into should you find yourself not only without a job but minus a health insurance policy as well. One of the first options you should consider if you have lost your job and want to continue your current health coverage is protection under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, also known as COBRA. COBRA allows individuals to extend their current group health insurance policy coverage from their prior job in various circumstances, one such circumstance being the loss of a job. This Act provides individuals with an extension of health insurance coverage for a certain period of time at a certain specified premium.

If COBRA is not an option for you, another avenue to pursue when trying to find health insurance after losing your job is to obtain a new policy from another health insurer. Since you will undoubtedly be counting your pennies due to the lack of current employment, the amount of the premium will certainly be an issue and it may be difficult to find an extensive health insurance policy with reasonable rates. With that said, there are certain health insurance companies which cater to individuals in your situation and searching around may yield favorable results for you.

Lastly, if you find that the prior two health insurance options do not work for you, you can look into being added to a family member's health insurance policy. The overall premium of your family member will definitely increase and there may be some hurdles to jump over, such as those pertaining to pre-existing conditions and undergoing certain physical exams, but this provides a wonderful option should it be available to you.

Whichever option you may choose, be certain to shop around with various insurance companies in order to ensure that you are getting the most favorable premium and the health insurance policy that suits your needs.
