The Mount Rushmore State is home to almost 767,000 people. Every year, an additional 11,000 are born in the state. Unfortunately, 12 percent of South Dakota residents do not have a health insurance plan and many others have plans that don't adequately cover their medical expenses. With all the add-on and supplemental insurance policies available today, everyone in South Dakota can have the health insurance they need to take care of themselves and their families.

South Dakota Health Facts

Almost 78 percent of the new mothers in South Dakota don't get the prenatal care they need to, resulting in 780 low birth weight babies every year, 7 percent of all newborns. Eleven percent are born prematurely. As they grow, the number of those getting proper health care don't grow along with them. Sadly, 14 percent of kids under the age of 3 don't get the immunizations they need, 12 percent of kids between the ages of 10 and 17 are overweight, and less than half of all children in South Dakota saw both a doctor and a dentist last year. The most basic health insurance policy would remedy all of these issues for a minimal cost.

Health Insurance Needs in South Dakota

Adults would do well to take advantage of the regular doctor visits covered by a good health insurance plan. Six percent of South Dakotans have diabetes, 11 percent have asthma, 60 percent are overweight or obese and almost 20 percent smoke. All of these conditions can be quite serious if not properly treated and monitored. Don't wait another moment - get your free health insurance quote today.

South Dakota Health Insurance Laws

South Dakota law allows insurance companies to deny coverage based on health status. Pre-existing conditions can be temporarily excluded with the imposition of a maximum exclusion period of 12 months, or permanently excluded with the use of an elimination rider. Pregnancy qualifies as a pre-existing condition, but genetic information does not. There are minimal limits on premium prices. Individuals who are denied coverage can purchase a plan through the South Dakota Risk Pool. Check with your state insurance department for details. The state prohibits cancellation of your policy because you become sick.
