To purchase a Health Insurance Marketplace plan with the essential benefits outlined in ACA, you must have a qualifying event – similar to those for COBRA. If you have a qualifying event, you get what’s called a ‘Special Open Enrollment’ Period. SEP will last 60 days from the time of the qualifying event and allows you to shop and purchase Health Insurance with essential benefits of a Health Insurance Marketplace plan wherever you like. You are also eligible for the federal aid you can get during open enrollment. Some of the most common qualifying events include:

If you have moved or will be moving to an area where your current health coverage is no longer available or offered, this is considered a qualifying event.

What if I don’t have a qualifying event?

For most, you will still be able to purchase a Short-term Health Insurance plan to hold you over until Open Enrollment begins Nov. 1, 2015. These plans are often cheaper than Healthcare.gov plans (before the subsidy), but similarly offer less coverage and protection. They are a great way to protect yourself.
