The Tar Heel State is home to more than 8.6 million Americans and every year the population grows with the arrival of almost 120,000 new babies. Unfortunately, 17 percent of North Carolina has no health insurance protection. However, with the options available in health insurance policies today, it's not too difficult for most residents to find a policy that suits their needs and their budget.

North Carolina Health Facts and Issues

When parents don't have health insurance, kids suffer even before they are born. On average, 16 percent of North Carolina's mothers-to-be don't get the prenatal care they need during their pregnancies. This results in 10,800 babies born each year with a low birth weight, 9 percent of all newborns. Almost 14 percent are born prematurely and another 18 percent don't receive the immunizations that are recommended by the American Medical Association. Nineteen percent of kids between the ages of 10 and 17 are overweight and only 59 percent visited both a dentist and a doctor last year. Investing in the most basic healthcare policy would cover these issues and more for a low fee.

Pre-existing conditions can be excluded temporarily with the imposition of a maximum exclusion period of 12 months, or permanently with the use of an elimination rider. HIPAA eligible applicants can not be excluded due to pre-existing conditions. For eligibility requirements contact your state insurance department. There are no regulations limiting premium prices.
