The Garden State is home to more than 8.6 million people. Every year, another 115,250 are born into the New Jersey family. Unfortunately, more than 15 percent do not currently have health insurance. The good news is that with just a few minutes of your time, you can join the ranks of the insured and find a health insurance policy to suit your needs.

Health Facts and Issues in New Jersey

More than 21 percent of mothers-to-be in New Jersey don't get the prenatal care they need, resulting in 9500 babies born with a low birth weight each year, 8 percent of all newborns. Another 12 percent are born prematurely and 19 percent don't receive the immunizations they need for optimum health. At least 14 percent of children between the ages of 10 and 17 are considered overweight and only 68 percent got to see both a dentist and a doctor last year. A basic health insurance policy would provide these children with the help the checkups they need to prevent most of these problems.

New Jersey Health Insurance Laws

New Jersey law does not allow insurance companies to turn you down for coverage if you have a health problem. You must enroll for a new policy in the month of October. Pre-existing conditions can be excluded for a maximum period of 12 months. Pregnancy qualifies as a pre-existing condition; however, complications resulting from pregnancy will be covered. If you are HIPAA eligible, no pre-existing conditions can be excluded. Check with your state insurance department for eligibility requirements. There are regulations limiting premium prices.
