Nevada is home to 2.4 million Americans and every year another 35,200 are born into the fold. Unfortunately, 18 percent of the residents of The Silver State don't have health insurance. The good news is that with just a little bit of research, anyone with any budget can afford one of the new healthcare policies available.

Nevada Health Facts and Issues

The need for health insurance for basic checkups starts in the womb. Unfortunately, 25 percent of Nevadan mothers-to-be don't get the prenatal care they need. This results in some of the 2800 babies that are born each year with a low birth weight, 8 percent of all newborns. Another 13.5 percent are born prematurely and 31 percent don't receive the proper immunizations. Twelve percent of children between the ages of 10 and 17 in Nevada are overweight and only 58 percent got to see both a doctor and a dentist last year. With basic healthcare insurance, children can get yearly checkups for a minimal cost.

Health Insurance Needs in Nevada

Adults in Nevada, too, can get the checkups they need at the dentist and their family physician with a good health insurance policy. Seven percent of Nevadan adults are diagnosed with diabetes, 12 percent have asthma, 56 percent are overweight or obese and 23 percent smoke. For every 100,000 people in Nevada, 459 are diagnosed with cancer and 186 of them will die from the disease. All of these conditions, if caught early, can be treated before they become overwhelming. Nevada Health Insurance Laws

Nevada law allows insurance companies to deny coverage if you have a health problem. If you are HIPAA eligible, you can not be denied coverage. Check with your state insurance department for eligibility qualifications. Pre-existing conditions can be excluded temporarily, with the imposition of an exclusion period, or permanently with the use of an elimination rider. Pregnancy qualifies as a pre-existing condition. The state prohibits cancellation of your policy if you become sick.
