Health Insurance and Marriage
Marriage is a life-changing experience. Two separate lives must be blended together. Health insurance is just one area of life that changes when two people marry. Your spouse may have insurance through his or her employer. Once married, you will likely be eligible for coverage under your spouse’s plan.
Things to Consider Before Consolidating Health Care After Marriage
For the sake of convenience and cost, if this is the case, it may be wise to consolidate healthcare plans under the same carrier. Maybe both individuals have insurance with their employers. Whose insurance should the couple keep? It is best to research both plans and decide which plan covers the services which are most important to both of you. Maybe one of you has bad back pain and sees a chiropractor regularly. If one plan covers some of the expense for your chiropractic care, and the other plan does not, chose the plan that will cover the healthcare you want and need. Maybe both plans are similar, but one plan has providers or hospitals significantly closer to your home. In this case, convenience may be the deciding factor.
Perhaps cost is the most important factor. If you and your spouse are planning on starting a family in the future, check out the pregnancy, maternity, well child care and infertility benefits in both plans. Do both plans offer minimum maternity stays, cover pregnancy complications, and offer genetic testing? Make a list of the most important factors to each of you when it comes to healthcare and go from there. Cost, maternity services, accessibility, mental health benefits, whatever those factors may be, choose a plan which meets your needs as a couple.
