Protecting your family is a top priority – begin with a comprehensive family health insurance plan. Without family health insurance, you risk depleting your finances should a member of your family need medical care, suffer an injury, or need surgery. The costs of healthcare can be astronomical, so take the necessary precautions to protect your financial stability.

With children in your home who depend on you, you don’t want to be strapped with the bills associated with healthcare when you are uninsured. Anything can happen – from emergency illness to injury – and even routine doctor’s visits can take their toll financially if you are uninsured.

Finding Affordable Coverage

Of course, if you are not insured through a group insurance plan, the cost of a family health insurance policy can seem exorbitant. True, it will cost more for a family health insurance plan, but consider how quickly the medical expenses can add up without a plan. The cost of the premium provides the peace of mind that your healthcare expenses will be more manageable with insurance coverage.

When evaluating your family health insurance options, cost of course is a major consideration. There are other important aspects of family health insurance that you should also be aware of – consider choosing the plan that best fits your family’s particular needs. Review the plans below to get an idea of what type of plan would be most suitable for your family.

Family Health Insurance Options

The following family health insurance plans are available. You should review each to decide which plan would best cover your family's needs, and which would be most affordable.

  • Indemnity plans – have a larger selection of healthcare providers than managed care plans; pay a share of the costs for covered services after they receive the bill.

  • Managed-care plans – HMO, PPO, and POS plans use provider networks, meaning healthcare providers have agreed to perform their services for patients at pre-negotiated rates; most of these providers submit claim forms to the insurance company for payment.

Each of these plans has advantages, it just depends on which option is the best fit for your family. If you consider a managed-care plan, evaluate the participating healthcare providers in your area to make sure there are enough physicians to serve your family. Managed care plans generally offer lower out-of-pocket expenses and less paperwork. The indemnity plan will give you the greatest number of physician options, but may require more payment upfront as you typically will pay the costs in advance and then get reimbursed from the insurance company.

The best approach as a consumer is to carefully evaluate your family’s upcoming healthcare needs and determine which option best suits your budget.
