CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield has a guaranteed issue (meaning you can not be turned down for coverage) if you are HIPAA eligible. Check with your state insurance department for eligibility criteria. Other insurance companies are allowed by law to turn you down for coverage. Pre-existing conditions can be excluded from coverage. Pregnancy qualifies as a pre-existing condition but genetic information does not. In the event you have a pre-existing condition and a guaranteed issue policy, there is a maximum exclusion period of 10 months. There are no regulations limiting premium costs. The state prohibits cancellation of your policy if you become sick.
