We all know that health costs are on the rise, and it’s a good idea to have health insurance. Although we don’t like to think about it, unforeseen accidents and illnesses can happen, using up our cash reserves. That is why we need health insurance to be an investment into the protection and security of our futures. CareFirst presents a number of options, both HMO and PPO, designed to protect and secure your future.

CareFirst BCBS District of Columbia Individual Health Plans

If you live in the D.C. area and need help with your individual health insurance needs, CareFirst Blue Cross offers a number of plans for your review. Details of a number of these plans follow:

BlueChoice HMO

This referral-based coverage option offers optimum coverage and protection, within a network of primary care physicians (PCPs). BCBS offers three tiers of prescription coverage, so that you can truly customize your coverage for your individual needs.

BlueChoice Opt-Out POS

CareFirst's POS option offers the coverage and security of an HMO with freedom from the PCP referral requirements that typically characterize an HMO. Members pay a lower out-of-cost fee for in-network physicians, but are not limited in treatment allowance.

BluePreferred PPO

This option enables you to customize your coverage to meet your own needs and budget. PPO members have the freedom to control their own costs by staying in-network, yet also have the freedom to seek treatment from out-of-network physicians. Members do not have to pick a PCP, nor do they need a referral to seek supplementary treatments.

Other Options

CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield also offers a number of other coverage options, included Consumer Directed Health Plans, PPNs, cafeteria plans and Open Access variations on their standard offerings.

CareFirst BlueChoice, Inc. is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and has a strictly defined region (known as a service area) in which it can operate. The CareFirst BlueChoice, Inc. service area encompasses Maryland, the District of Columbia and portions of northern Virginia.
