Individual Health Insurance – Wish you
didn’t need it, but can’t have a secure future
without it these days. We all know the cost of health care
is rising sharply. If you live in Idaho and are looking for
individual coverage, you can take comfor in knowing that Blue Cross of Idaho provides health plans
to 550,000 of your neighbors (as of March 2011). Their company mission is to
provide access to quality and affordable health insurance
with excellent customer service.
You may think that you are one of only a few
people who need this type of coverage – but you’re
not! While most people have access to group health coverage,
there are still many people who need the individual type.
This includes people who are self-employed, at a job without
health benefits, recently graduated, recently divorced, considering
early retirement, off of COBRA, etc. Your needs for a plan
are unique, and that’s where BC of Idaho can help. They
have multiple plans so it is easy to find a plan tailored
to your needs and your budget.
BC of Idaho Individual Health Plans
BlueCare™ PPO
Offers
the Preferred Provider Organization network of health professionals
that will help you save with out-of-pocket costs. You have
freedom to choose other health providers not in the network
but it will cost you more. There are three programs to choose
from when signing up: 1000, 2000, and 5000. Each has different
deductibles, co-payments and out-of-pocket maximums. All three
come with prescription drug coverage, wellness and prevention
services.
Essential Blue™ Basic PPO
Provides four deductible levels to choose from. The premiums
are lower than the above plan but still provide coverage for
major illnesses. You should choose this plan if you do not
need help paying for certain medical services, like office
visits. By staying within the PPO network of providers you
save even more.
Essential Blue™ Plus
Provides coverage similar to Essential Blue Basic PPO, but
it also includes office visits with a $30 network co-payment
per visit (with a maximum number of visits). There are four deductibles
to choose from, as well as prescription drug coverage.
Personal Blue
Provides individual
major medical coverage and has four levels to choose from.
Choices include deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, and coinsurance
coverage. You can choose any participating Blue Cross health
professional.
HSA Blue
Involves a Health
Savings Account combined with a high deductible PPO health
insurance plan. With the tax-exempt HSA, you deposit money
in the account and use it toward your annual deductible and
other allowed medical expenses. Any money leftover is allowed
to remain in the account and grow tax free – or you
can use it later for needed medical costs. The high deductible
PPO plan comes with a lower annual premium, although you still
have the comprehensive health coverage that comes with a Blue
Cross of Idaho PPO plan.
Dental Blue™ PPO
Offers
lower cost dental coverage through the Blue Cross of Idaho
network of dental providers. You have a choice of two different
maximum benefits per year and per person: $1000 or $1500.
In-network preventive services have a $20 co-payment. Both
routine and major dental procedures are covered, but in varying
amounts according to the plan.
Short Term Blue
Provides temporary
health coverage for one to ten months. There is a $500 deductible,
20% coinsurance after the deductible for covered services,
maximum out-of-pocket expenditure of $2500. This plan is intended
for those who need health insurance for only a short time.
Medigap (Medicare Supplement) Classic
Blue†
Provides extra help with costs not always covered
by Medicare.

benefits over and above Medicare. It is available in only
a few counties of Idaho.
