Nearly 50 million Americans did not have health insurance in 2010. By 2020, this number is set to rise to over 67 million. There's no reason you should have to be one of the millions of uninsured adults in this country.9 In fact, with the right research, you can find high quality, affordable health insurance. To get started, let's take a look at the basic types of health insurance available to you.

Types of affordable health insurance

There are four main types of private health insurance. The PPO plan is a common type of coverage, but other plans may offer additional flexibility and cost savings.

  1. Traditional Health Care Coverage: A participant can visit any doctor or hospital that they want without seeing their primary care physician. Such a plan comes with a list of participating health care facilities who are preferred partners and who charge lower co-pays than non-participating doctors.
  2. HMO Insurance Plans: Participants are required to see a primary physician who acts as a "gate-keeper " and refers people to specialists. HMO plans also restrict the choice of doctors that are available, but they can be a low cost option for someone that makes infrequent trips to the doctor.
  3. Preferred Provider Organization Plans: According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the PPO plan is the most common type of health insurance for covered workers. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimated that it outnumbers the second most common type (the HMO) by almost 300%.10
  4. Indemnity Plans: This type of plan pays the participant a pre-determined amount for any illness or surgery that is covered. The money is sent directly to you, and you deal directly with the health provider. Indemnity plans will usually not cover all of the expenses of a major illness. However, they can be a low cost alternative.
